SHAPES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES

TETRAVALENCY AND SHAPES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES 

The tetravalence, formation of covalent bond and catenation property of carbon results in the formation of a large number ofcompounds of carbon. These compounds are covalent in natureand are studied under a branch of chemistry called organicchemistry. Carbon atoms present in organic compounds are either, 2 or 3 hybridised. Hybridisation influences the bond length and bond strength inorganic compounds. The  hybrid orbital contains mores-character and hence, it is closer to its nucleus and forms shorterand stronger bonds than 3 hybrid orbital.The bond angles and geometry associated with the three types of hybridization are summarized below :
